- Fire at MNIB River Road complex
- General phone lines still down
- Farmers in contact via dedicated cellphone number
Nearly 2 weeks after the emergency crew extinguished a fire at the top floor of the Marketing and National Importing Board’s (MNIB) Fresh Produce and Commodities Complex at River Road, St George, phone lines are still down at the facility.
The newly renovated building is a centralised point for the receipt, grading, packaging, storing and distribution of fresh produce purchases from farmers. The section where the fire took place once housed the administrative and quality assurance departments, among others.
Management is still unable to get phone lines up and running. Ruel Edwards, Chief Executive Officer, MNIB said the section where the fire took place cannot be accessed, therefore it is still unknown as to extent of the damage and the cost implications for the company. They are awaiting a report from the Royal Grenada Police Force as to the cause of the fire.
In the meantime, he says the company keeps in contact with farmers via a dedicated cellphone line until the problem can be rectified. The MNIB river road facility can be contacted on 423 4965.
