Social Development Minister, Hon Delma Thomas has announced that the Grenada Government is well underway with preparations for the renaming of the Botanical Gardens after the country’s first prime minister, Sir Eric Matthew Gairy.

During Tuesday’s post Cabinet news briefing, Minister Thomas said, “We will have a group of international volunteers, who will be joining our local persons, students from TAMCC, in helping to revitalise the whole area to make it an attractive site, as we recognise the tremendous contribution that Sir Eric Mathew Gairy made to Grenada. As our father of independence, he was our first prime minister. He has done a lot for our country and we must recognise what he has done.”

The renaming of the Botanical Gardens is a government initiative to honour Sir Eric, who led the country to independence in 1974.
