Minister of Youth, Sport and Religious Affairs, the Hon Emmalin Pierre, has sent her congratulations to Grenadian star athlete, Kirani James, on his victory at the Diamond League, Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, USA, on Saturday 31 May.
Kirani James, Sports Ambassador for Grenada, won over his fierce rival Lashawn Merritt of the United States, in a time of 43.97 seconds, the leading time for 2014. James remains the only non-American to run times under 44 seconds in the 400 meter event.
Minister Pierre stated that James continues to represent his country proudly as a sports ambassador, and as a positive example to the youth of Grenada, while remaining down to earth and focused.
Similarly, in her remarks at the opening of the Grenada Football Association’s 2014 season on Saturday, Governor General Dame Cecile La Grenade held James in esteem. She said, “Grenada has the capacity and capability to achieve this feat (to be part of a World Cup event).We now need to structure, invest and exploit the athleticism and drive of our people. We have the shining example of Kirani James, our star athlete, Olympic Gold Medalist, as proof that this can be achieved.”
Pierre also pledged the continued support of her ministry and that of the entire Government and people of Grenada, in all James’ future endeavours.
