Benefit Concert for Dominica

The people of Dominica are to benefit from a major fundraising concert carded for Saturday, 7 November. A special planning committee has been commissioned by Hon. Brenda Hood, the minister responsible for Culture and the Performing Arts. The committee is charged with the responsibility to put plans together for the event, which is expected to showcase a number of performing artistes and local live bands. Several local artistes, bands and service providers have already pledged their support to the initiative.

The planning committee held its first meeting on Monday, 7 September and discussed the way forward in executing the event to ensure maximum participation from the general public. The culture senator made the call for persons to give back to the people of Dominica, who have been badly affected following the passage of tropical storm Erika. She reflected on the support that Dominica offered to Grenada, after the passage of Hurricane Ivan some 11 years ago on 7 September 2004, and indicated that it is only fitting to give back to the people of Dominica during their struggles at this time.

All performers and service providers are asked to provide their support to the event that is expected to see a large turnout of Grenadians, who are known for their support to our regional brothers and sisters in their time of need. Minister Hood informed the meeting that the Government is fully supportive of the initiative and that the Prime Minister, Dr Keith Mitchell, made similar remarks at the recently held ‘After Carnival’ symposium.

Full fledged marketing and promotion of the event will commence within next week, and patrons are asked to stay in tune with the media for updates on tickets availability. The event is being planned for the National Stadium with an expected turn out of over 5,000 persons.

Persons wishing to contribute and or offer assistance can contact the secretariat on telephone number 435-2839.
