The Grenada Independence Anniversary Committee of New York (GIACONY), is in the final stages of preparing to commemorate Grenada’s 42nd Anniversary of Independence, in New York City.

The celebrations kick off this Saturday, 23 January, with a social evening and cultural extravaganza showcasing Grenadian food, arts and craft at the Holy Cross Church Auditorium. There are also cultural items on the evening’s program.

The committee will host the second annual Miss Grenada Independence Pageant and Youth Fest on 30 January at the Mahalia Jackson High School, which will feature 5 young ladies of Grenadian heritage exhibiting different aspects of Grenadian culture.

The Annual Church Service will be staged on 31 January at the Full Gospel Assembly Church in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, and the Annual Gala to be staged on Saturday, 6 February, at the Grand Prospect Hall.

The committee’s events come to a close on Thursday, 11 February with a senior’s tea party honouring retired Grenadian nationals in the tri-state area.

Proceeds from funds raised in the events are being used for the purchase of a new X-ray machine for the Princess Alice Hospital in St Andrew.
