Farmers from St Andrew and surrounding areas who were adversely affected by the freak weather system last month will be receiving compensation cheques from the Government.

In speaking to the Minister for Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Lands, Hon. Yolande Bain–Horsford, Government agreed to pay 50% of the damages to all affected farmers.

Although exact figures were not provided neither by the Minister nor in the Budget presentation, it was noted that after their analysis was completed, a total of 97 farmers will be compensated. Minister Bain–Horsford said the total damages were roughly about $400,000 plus. These finances are coming from an emergency fund the Government has.

The Minister went on to say they will be a handing over ceremony some time soon, but the cheques will be distributed in time for Christmas.
