On the last day of September, during all of October, and into the 1st and 2nd week of November, the Grenada Association of Retired Persons (GARP) celebrates Grenada Month of Older Persons.
Week 1 of this celebration includes the following important events to assist seniors and to raise awareness about issues affecting seniors.
Saturday, 30 September: GARP is hosting a free medical clinic at the GARP Welcome Centre on Kirani James Boulevard (next to Foodland Supermarket), from 9 am to 1 pm. Medical practitioners will be checking blood pressure, blood sugar, foot health and general health in the clinic. Please bring your senior family members to see these specialists from St George’s University (SGU) as they are volunteering their time to provide their expertise to the public.
Sunday, 1 October: The United Nations Day of Older Persons theme for this year is ‘Stepping into the future: tapping the talents, contributions and participation of older persons in society.’ Please join the congregation at the Evangelical Church (on Market Hill) to start the celebration of Month of Older Persons. Special messages will be delivered, and the sermon will be well attended by invited guests. GARP has nominated 2 unsung-hero seniors to be honoured for their community service. Come and enjoy the service, find out who the honourees are, and join the celebration.
Monday, 2 October: The Grenada Broadcasting Network (GBN TV/Radio) show ‘To The Point’ will include special guests Carol Vazquez, President and Founder of GARP and Nicholas Snag, a member of GARP. They will discuss issues affecting seniors, the Month of Older Persons events being planned, and the GARP Expo to be held on 28 October.
Saturday, 7 October: A GARP information booth will be set up to provide literature and a slide presentation at Spiceland Mall in Grand Anse, St George to advise the public on issues that affect seniors, GARP objectives and goals, and planned events for Month of Older Persons. Drop by to have a chat and see how you might be able to help seniors in your area of Grenada. GARP is seeking new members to join their exciting team, so be sure to fill out an application form.
Saturday, 28 October: Please mark your calendars to bring your family and friends to enjoy music, great food, and many fun activities such as beauty tips, Reiki treatments, stories and games, at the GARP Expo at the Morne Rouge playing field in Grand Anse.
