Teachers were promised a Pension when they retire, its part of the deal, but since the Grenada NNP Government have long ignored their fiscal obligations, pensions funds carry significant unfunded liabilities, threatening their ability to fund Teachers retirement.
So it makes sense that our teachers, and particularly their Unions, want to fight back. These Teachers are deprived of something they have worked hard for. Teachers should advocate for a choice of plans, if not an entirely new system.
Prime Minister Mitchell is in over his head, for his erroneous statement of his 2% new offer.
After signing a Memorandum Of Understanding,(MOU) with the Teachers and Union for a 25% increase,. 2% is a slap in the face for teachers. Mitchell must understand that the Teachers are not pets of the powerful, they must fight for a reasonable wage, and not be intimidated. It seems that the government can give huge pay to its ministers, but not decent wages for Teachers.
Instead of fighting the teachers and the public workers union, the Mitchell government should be implementing and signing a Public Workers Rights Legislatio aimed at protecting Union Membership in Grenada.
The Public Workers Union is facing and confronting a bullying NNP Govetnment, they must stand tohether to win. The gobetnment has a choice. It can either do a 180 degree turn from its deveptive course of its anemic response of non action, and act like a normal government, or it can see the beginning of a government and country in crisis.
There is sufficient discontent among the Teachers who must force through change. They are at the end of the beginning of an industrial revolution, which can precipitate the govetnment downfall.
