We have noted with deep concern the recent statement of the Grenada Union of Teachers (GUT) reminding its members of the work-to-rule and including in that work-to-rule that School-Based Assessments (SBAs) for primary and secondary schools should not be marked, but sent directly to the Ministry of Education.
These examinations are an essential part of the education process in our nation. It seems to us that, if the teaching of Grade 6 and Form 5 is part of the ordinary curriculum of our school activity, the examinations are equally part of the ordinary curriculum and should not be subject to a work-to-rule.
The union seems to leave it open to teachers and principals to do as they see fit in this matter. We earnestly appeal to all teachers and principals to ensure the marking of all school-based work and to send the results to the relevant authority. The passing of papers to the ministry leaves the process open to actions which may well harm some of our children, especially the children of the poor. It may also mean that the results will not reflect the hard work that the teachers themselves will have done.
Those of us who have already received our education should not in any way impede the progress of our children in their own educational journey.
Trusting that the GUT will respond positively to our appeal, we ask that both sides move even more diligently to the resolution of the still outstanding issues. We remain open to assist in the resolution of these matters which continue to seriously affect our nation.
