The regional law fraternity is in mourning following the passing of retired Grenadian Judge Albert Redhead who resided in Antigua. He died at the Mount St John’s Medical Centre, Michael’s Mount on Monday night.
“It is with deep regret that we inform of the passing of His Lordship the Hon. Justice Albert Redhead, Retired Justice of Appeal, Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court,” stated a notice on the Eastern Caribbean Court website.
Describing the 77-year-old personality as memorable, the notice stated, “We will always cherish the memory of his enthusiasm, hard work, and discipline.”
As one of the leading jurists in the Eastern Caribbean, Justice Redhead’s pioneering and landmark cases as a judicial officer will go a long way to benefit many future generations. “The Hon. Chief Justice, Justices of Appeal, High Court Judges, Masters, the Magistracy, Management and Staff of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court offer heartfelt condolences to his wife, June Redhead, his children, relatives, colleagues and friends. May he live on in our hearts and the hearts of all those who loved him.”
His Lordship Justice Albert Redhead who is from the St George’s North East area worked in many of the Commonwealth countries of the Caribbean. He received a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of London in 1971 and in 1972 was called to the bar of England and Wales by the Middle Temple.
In 1974, Redhead moved to Saint Kitts and Nevis, where he began working as a Crown Counsel. In 1975, he became Registrar of the Saint Kitts and Nevis courts and also served as a magistrate of the courts. In 1980, he became the Director of Public Prosecutions for Saint Kitts and Nevis.
In 1985, the Judicial and Legal Services Commission of the Caribbean Community appointed Redhead to be a High Court Judge of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court. In 1997, he became an Appeals Court Judge of the same court. Since retiring from the Court in 2003, he has twice been re-appointed as an Acting High Court Judge of the Court from 2004 to 2006 and he was again appointed in 2007.
As a High Court Judge, Redhead had been assigned to reside in and hear cases from a number of countries, including Saint Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, Anguilla, and Saint Lucia. His most recent appointment has been to reside in and hear cases from the British Virgin Islands.
