Prime Minister, Dr the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell has welcomed news that hundreds of Grenadians will be employed by Royalton Grenada when the rebranded hotel opens its doors in December 2019.
Located on the site of what was the Grenadian by Rex, the rebranded hotel, Royalton Grenada, will provide direct employment for at least 400 persons while hundreds of others will also benefit from indirect employment.
New majority shareholders of the property, Sunwing Travel Group has confirmed that in addition to this significant level of direct and indirect employment when the hotel becomes operational, the construction phase which gets underway this month, will see the hiring of at least 450 persons.
The Prime Minister was apprised of these facts during a meeting last Friday with Sunwing’s Hotels & Resorts Executive Vice-President, Daniel Diaz.
In response, Dr Mitchell said, “It is heartening to hear about the number of jobs that will be generated. Projects like this create significant employment opportunities for locals, both in the construction phase and as permanent staff when the facility is operational. Government welcomes any initiative that will provide gainful employment for our people. We have witnessed a steady decline in the country’s unemployment rate, and we are keen to see this continue through the impact of projects like this.”
Providing a status update on the project, Diaz said plans are progressing “smoothly and quickly” and he was high in praise for the professionalism and accuracy of local planners engaged in the project.
The rebranded hotel, Royalton Grenada will include 59 new rooms, which will bring the property total to 271, making it the largest hotel in Grenada. Despite the limited window in which to deliver additional rooms, Diaz gave assurances that Sunwing is committed to doing so and to welcome the first guests in December.
Training opportunities offered by the Royalton have been highlighted as another key area that will benefit Grenadians and the Prime Minister has also welcomed this potential for capacity building in tourism and hospitality arts.
It is envisaged that Sunwing will develop a second property on the site of the Royalton Grenada, which spans an area of 30-acres.

went there or hiring
My continued concern with all these multimillion dollar project is simple, what do we really have to show or what do we really attain from these investments besides the jobs offered . Our children is the future of the country , therefore I would like to see something tangible that our kids can look forward to like investments in our schools ,better facilities ,computers ,playgrounds . we should make it mandatory that every multimillion dollar investor participate in the modernization of a school ,by now half of the school in the country would be fully refurbished and the government would not have to spend a dime to do so, we should be offering tax break to these investors only if they in turn reinvest in our kids future. As a citizen I am very concern with the lack of amenities that are available to our schools ,these companies that are reaping the benefits of investing in the country should also be investing in our children’s future . I do appreciate that we were chosen as a destination for such project that will help to lower the unemployment rate within the country, but are these jobs coming with a benefit package so the those employees can look forward to something after investing a significant number of years within the company. Or will they be considered just another number and be discarded , why isn’t the government negotiating better deals for its citizens ,which in tern will be beneficial to all parties involved , this will lead to a fruit full production from employees ,and a much happier customer experience which in tern will lead to customers returning because of the service that was provided creating a cause and affect outcome .
I stayed at the Rex many a time, the staff were so welcoming & friendly. Hope those who would like to return are given a genuine opportunity.
The hotel was like a family, guest and staff all part of this family. Many guest returned year after year. Hope the hotel will remain an affordable resort
as many on the island seem to be aiming for the rich and famous. I know money has been invested therefore there will be a price increase but it would be nice if it was kept to a reasonable amount, also keep at down to earth no class division resort.
Will it be an all inclusive resort? Grenada is actually the next place I have been looking into to vacation at. I can be a first booking. Thanks.
Hopefully a range of career opportunities will be available to Grenadians and not just the lowest paid short term positions, which only last a few months if that.
Accredited training which means it will be widely recognised would also indicate the company’s committment to equipping locals with recognised and transferable skills.
Grenadians should be vigilant and keep watching.
Read the small print and watch what they deliver.
would love to get job as chef at the hotel
Hope the hotel will include art from Grenada.
