Recently, a new global theme “Our Solutions Are in Nature” was launched as the world celebrated International Day for Biological Biodiversity (or IDB).
This year (2020) has been singled out as a milestone year of “reflection, opportunity and solutions”, and as a global community we are asked to “re-examine our relationship with the natural world”, especially in light of the on-going global Covid-19 pandemic. It is significant to note that “despite all our technological advances, we are completely dependent on nature being healthy and well balanced” so we can benefit from the goods like honey, ground provision and fruits from nature, as well as services like water cycling, oxygen production and wave energy buffer carried out by nature’s ecosystems.
This year’s theme is intended to place the emphasis on “hope, solidarity and the importance of working together at all levels, to build a sustainable future for life in harmony with nature”, and so for the first time, this year there will be an all out focus on-line campaign, soliciting videos and statements from every region of the world, showcasing actions done at the local level, which support the IDB global theme.
Following the same trend, is the upcoming global celebration of World Environment Day on 5 June 2020, this year under the theme “Time For Nature” – with a focus on highlighting the role of natural environment in “providing the essential infrastructure that supports life on earth, and human development.”
Here in Grenada, we are in full agreement with the need to conserve and promote our natural environment, and to use nature’s goods and services wisely. The concrete actions taken over the last few months have pointedly focused on these goals. The drastic reduction in the usage of Styrofoam and single-use plastics in Grenada, with the final phases of key legislation coming into effect later this year – are all part of Grenada’s robust bid and commitment to conservation of nature.
Many Grenadians showed support for this year’s IDB theme “Our Solutions Are in Nature”, by reposting the International Day for Biological Diversity 2020 slogan to their social media feeds including Profile pictures, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Another fun online competition, this time promoting local creativity with the use of “environmentally friendly face masks”, will be launched soon, as we count down to World Environment Day and their theme “Time For Nature”.

2020 is the year of reckoning for, us, Indigenous Grenadian. If we don’t wake up and make the people who are responsible account for or fix the no-win situation they have put us in, we will relegate ourselves to the ash cans and garbage heaps of history. We will have nothing to look forward to but torment, destitution, poverty, and more.
The very people who have destroyed all of our sea coasts in lighting speed and in the name of tourism are now telling us to participate in some competition to help them window-dress their destruction of our natural environment. Suddenly, when it is time to use us, they are preaching that they care about our environment.
Have they forgotten that quickly what they have done to La Sagesse a few months ago and our sea coast over the years? If so, the link below will remind us and them. The natural environment in La Sagesse took millions or even billions of years to form and these wise people who claim they represent our interes destroyed, with their Arab buddies, in the blink of eye.
I challenge all Indigenous Grenadians to participate in this so-called competition by sharing the link to show the example of the crises that we and our natural environment face everyday.
Instead of putting a stop to this, they are not talking about plastics and Styrofoam, which they can only ban on paper. I wonder what type of material the Chubby bottles are made from, given their so called ban. It is very laughable!

John, many Grenadians are concerned about the natural environment, and much work has been done by both government and non-governmental departments in this regard. Of course more work is needed – as you have said, it is a year of reckoning for us all.
So – will you be a part of the solution, or just another person complaining about the problem?
No-one can claim that Styrofoam and Plastics are only banned on paper… there has been significant reduction on importation and usage of these products in Grenada over the past year. But it will take all of us, and the public at large to engender lasting change.
As I see it, legislation is just a framework within which we must operate. But real change will come when we as a people hold our own families and neighbours responsible for sensible environmentally healthy lifestyles. So let’s use every opportunity to connect our daily lifestyle actions to our health, and begin to encourage the change that will eventually lead to a national positive environmental outlook and actions on the ground in Grenada.
Your help is needed, John. So, you can ether gripe and complain and shout at the top of your “voice” about all the problems and inconsistencies – just like last year… or you can begin a new action in 2020 to show your positive change by personal example and call others to do the same.
So – which will it be? We wait to see – “Wisdom is proved right by all her children” (Luke 6: 35)
