On 11 July 2020, Grenada Co-operative Bank Limited awarded scholarships to 59 students as part of its annual Super Starter Education Investment Plan (EIP) Programme.
This programme is specially designed to ensure that EIP beneficiaries from each parish, including Carriacou and Petite Martinique qualify for the scholarship component.
The economic and socio-economic impact of the Covid-19 global pandemic has been far-reaching, making already stretched national resources more difficult to obtain, further disenfranchising families who have been struggling to make ends meet, and educationally, setting back children without the means to participate in the online learning environment. Recognizing these challenges, Co-op Bank, in its quest to always support the education of its citizens, decided to enhance the Super Starter Education Investment Plan Programme to benefit more students, in more ways.
Effective this year, there are 28 available spots for silver category scholarships, 4 students per parish, each receiving a value of $1,200 every year for the remainder of their primary school careers. There are 28 gold category scholarships, 4 students per parish each receiving one laptop this year and a value of $2,500 every year for the remainder of their secondary school careers. The platinum category scholarship, which considers tertiary education, was enhanced to provide 3 spots for students attending TA Marryshow Community College – a value of $3,000 each and one laptop computer – and 2 scholarships for university education – each valued at $45,000.
In the presence of the bank’s auditors, Pannell Kerr Forster, 27 silver category winners, 27 gold category winners, 3 platinum category (TAMCC) and 2 platinum category (university) winners were chosen in a random lottery draw, bringing the number of scholarships awarded over the past 11 years to 213, a financial investment of over $800,000.
Previously, 7 silver scholarships were awarded to primary school students, 7 gold scholarships were awarded to secondary school students, and every 2 years, 1 platinum scholarship valued at $45,000 was awarded for tertiary education.
