Prime Minister, Dr the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell, has called on landlords across the country to be more sensitive to the plight of some tenants who are impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The appeal from the Prime Minister applies to landlords who rent properties for both residential and commercial purposes.
In his national address on Sunday, Dr Mitchell encouraged landlords “to be more sensitive to the predicament faced by many tenants, especially those with good track records, but who are now unable to operate their business or have lost their jobs.”
Dr Mitchell noted that banks and other financial institutions have extended moratoria to clients, including those with mortgages and he urged that these benefits be passed on to tenants to help ease the financial burden the pandemic has created.
The Prime Minister further explained that this is not an attempt to absolve tenants of their responsibility to pay rent, however, there are cases where tenants are now unemployed, have experienced a pay cut or have not been able to operate their business.
Identifying landlords as a group of people who can inspire positivity in this period of crisis, Dr Mitchell recommended that, “Eviction should not to be the preferred course of action at this time.”

Landlords today are not the landlords of 100 or 200 years ago. We are not abusers of our tenants, we are much closer to being partners, providing a product that we are obliged to pay for and maintain so that our tenants have shelter or can conduct their business. It is time for this to be a cooperative rather than an adversarial relationship. One is expected to pay for their tools for their trade, their cars or transport, gasoline, food, how is rent any different. A contract has been entered into, we are not operating charities nor did we sign up to adopt. Get your head out of this backward thinking and be responsible for your commitments.

A fair, heart-felt question at times like these is subjected to Censorship by NOW Grenada is really troubling in a supposed Democracy. What will we stoop to next ?
But with great deal of Corrruption, there is a need for a great deal of cover – ups and Censorship. When the Press joins in those charades; troubling times are here for Grenada & its Citizens.

Well, well … how touching & caring !!
Perhaps the Prime Minister himself can be more sensitive to the struggles and the plight of our citizens impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and share his great wealth and holdings accumulated during his public service work. It would go far to showing real actions instead of just hollow words.
That would indeed be meaningful and putting real meaning to being sensitive.
So now we lose our income who will be sensitive to us? My outgoings are still there. Running an HMO I also pay the tenants bills which are growing due to being at home longer so am actually paying them to live there. The period is now too long to cope with an they will simply move rather than pay arrears as they have no roots or property, all landlord supplied, short of a suitcase or 2 of clothes. This is not going away soon be cheaper to walk away if any more extensions
The government has a string of those especially in St Patrick where they have around 4 which includes both ministers offices, the fire Stations and police so I guess that applies to him also.
The” Right Honarable” will eventually pay, even if he has to ask the residents of st Pat’s to pass the hat around.
