Grenada to implement 72-hour testing mandate for all travellers

Beginning Saturday, 28 November 2020, all travellers to Grenada will be required to obtain a PCR test from a certified laboratory within 72 hours of travel, and receive negative results in order to enter the country.

The 72-hour testing mandate will replace the current stipulation of securing the PCR test within 7 days of travel. The change in testing period follows a collective decision taken at a recent OECS meeting.

Health experts believe that people getting tested within 72 hours of travel will help to lessen potentially positive diagnoses after travellers enter the island. The closer the period is between testing and flight the less time individuals will have to contract the virus in their communities of origin before boarding the flight.

This measure is one more step in Grenada’s thrust to maintain a low case count, given the rising numbers of positive Covid-19 cases around the world.

Grenada’s recently announced entry requirement, the Pure Safe Travel Authorisation Certificate, helps to provide an added layer of health screening of potential travellers to the country.

Individuals are now able to complete and submit an online application for entry into the country, as well as upload their negative PCR test results onto the application. Once the application is approved, they will receive a Pure Safe Travel Authorisation Certificate.

Travellers are also required to present an electronic or printed copy of the certificate during check-in at their airports of origin.

The Pure Safe Travel Authorisation application can be accessed on covid19.gov.gd.

Love the application is online. It is not done by an individual so the day and time doesn’t matter. You’d be just fine

If my understanding is correct you have to do a test 72 hours before flight. It takes 48 hours to get results. You have to complete the entry application form to get authorised certificate no later than 48 hours before leaving & in that process you have to upload your positive results. That would mean you only took the test the day before & result would not be ready till next day. To me not sufficient time. You need at least an extra day.

If I understand the Grenadian Government don’t want tourists. It seems that he prefer empty hotels and restaurants and naturally a lot of unenployments workers. OK we are not coming because we can stay much better at home…. than a quarantine in a closed room !!!

You have to be desperate, have lots of spare cash and time if one wants to come on holiday to the Caribbean islands right now. The protocols for entry can change daily and the cost for a PCR test varies enormously, $150 US in Grenada compared to $40 US in St Vincent $20 if you are a resident. On top you have to pay for a PCR test before flying or sailing and in many cases another PCR before leaving. Plus you have all the stress of flying, not knowing if you will be allowed to board your flight, catching the virus during your travels etc….. you’ll need more than a holiday when you get back home. Sad but that is the reality right now so try to imagine how the locals must be feeling without tourists that they depend on for a living.

We will not learn or we just don’t want to: why are tourists being allowed into our country in the privileged position of NOT having to get tested again? Do we have to be such prostitutes for a dollar? Its disgusting that we have such apartheid policies. It is to be expected that some tourists will infect hotel staff and that the staff, in turn, will infect other Grenadians. A stupid counterproductive policy.

A PCR test sometimes take 3 to five days to get the result. How can someone submit an application and attach the result to get approval if they haven’t received the result for approval before they travel

There are a few hotel that are not making people who did not receive their test result nor have they completed their required days of quarantine the right to move freely about the hotel grounds unbeknownst to the regular patrons who have now been placed at risk.

We are here now under quarantine. We cant leave our hotel room at all [even though the Ministry of Health website made it seem like we can roam freely about our hotel grounds]. But other guests at our hotel were unmasked—probably people who did the 4th day test. Entire families. I dont see how that makes any sense. They couldve gotten COVID right after the optional 4th day test and walked around this island freely spreading the virus. It’s a damn nonsensical mess.

Grenada says that tourists can stay at their hotels, which [to English speakers] means you can stay on the grounds of your hotel. This includes the beach, pool, restaurants, etc. The deal is you cant leave your hotel until you get tested on day 4, if you wish to do so to go out into town. Unfortunately, the language the Ministry of Health uses is highly misleading, and i suspect that that was done intentionally [this is an English-speaking Island]. YOU CANNOT LEAVE YOUR HOTEL ROOM. NOT JUST YOUR HOTEL, YOUR HOTEL ROOM. You spend thousands to get here and purchase lodging, but you will spend quite a bit more overeating [you can order room service, yay!] drinking, and not exercising in your fucking hotel room. This is the predicament I am in. As a caribbean woman and a world traveler, i never thought there would be a Caribbean Island i would not enjoy. Grenada was like, hold my beer! PLEASE DO NOT COME TO GRENADA, THEY ARE MISLEADING AND LYING TO TOURISTS. There is a difference between asking tourists to quarantine in their hotels and asking them not to leave their rooms.
