Frontline workers queued to receive the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine

  • Frontline workers received first dose of AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine
  • 350 vaccinated Monday, and an equal number already registered for Tuesday
  • Vaccination process will run from 22-26 February 2021

Tourism Minister Clarice Modeste on Monday, 22 February 2021 was among hundreds of tourism, hospitality and other frontline workers who received the first dose of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.

“It was really reassuring to see the number of persons who turned out to be vaccinated. This will assist us in restarting our tourism and travel sector. That sector as you know employs hundreds, and once we can get that sector up and running, the economic situation will be different for all,” said Modeste.

“Today’s turnout is the start of a rebirth of the sector that afford a livelihood to hundreds.” Modeste is a medical doctor by profession. She said that vaccines have worked over the years in combating various diseases. “I am confident that the Covid-19 vaccine will not only assist in resuming operations for the tourism and travel sectors, but other sectors that are either directly or indirectly linked to tourism,” she said.

Health Minister Nickolas Steele described the turnout as a significant uptake in Grenada’s strategy to live in a world where Covid-19 will become endemic. “It shows that the workers understand what is at stake, and why they need the protection for us to reopen the hospitality sector.” Steele was among the first 10 persons to receive the injection.

“The only solution right now, not just in Grenada but around the world, is getting vaccinated and I am pleased with the turnout. Based on the numbers on the first day, 350 were vaccinated and an equal number is already registered for Tuesday,” he said.

The national vaccination process will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis and will run from 22-26 February 2021. The current targeted frontline workers receiving the vaccine will include law enforcement officers such as police, customs, and immigration; port/dock workers; airport workers, hotel employees and certified taxi operators.

Grenada is scheduled to receive 45,600 AstraZeneca vaccines through the COVAX facility, but earlier in the month 3,000 vaccines were received as a gift from the Government of India.

It is sad to see how this platform is used to express politic opinions in such an insulting way. Let us face the facts. After all, our politicians did a pretty good job to protect us. Grenada has an impressive record to show where Covid 19 is concerned.

So, as per the photo, we don’t have to social distance if we’re lined up to get the vaccine…….?

I am in the UK and I’m 68 years old, I had the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine 2 weeks ago with no side effects. 13 million people, frontline workers and over 65s have had it with no reported side effects

This is GARBAGE !!! Those MOST AT RISK are your senior citizens. WHY are you putting Tourism workers over those who are most likely to die if they get Covid? The stupidness of this flipping Grenadian government is beyond belief !! Those seniors, living in care homes, those with underlying diseases such as diabetes MUST be vaccinnated FIRST ! WTF is the matter with you people???

The AstraZeneca vaccin is not suitable for seniors. It is recomended for people not older than 60 or 65 years depending of which scientist you want to believe. In Europe people not older than 65 years get it. There are also doubts of it protecting against the new variants of Covid-19 virus. It doesn’t protect against the South Africa variant. In South Africa they even stopped using it. And this vaccin that they use in Grenada is called AstraZeneca but it is made in India. I would’t vaccinate myself with medicines made in India.

Mr. Silvan you have displayed your profound ignorance. India manufactured 60% of the vaccines the world uses. India supplies vaccines and drugs to the world not only Covid19 vaccines. Please, my friend lift your head from the sand.

On the contrary the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine as it is properly called is suitable for the over 65s and in studies released on Monday was found to be very effective in creating antibodies in fact in theses age groups it was found to be better than the Pfizer vaccine. As regards the new variant it has been found effective against the so called Kent and Brazil variants but not so good with the South African variant. It is a fact that new variants will emerge from time to time and a booster vaccine is already being developed to counter the known variants. In the UK we have booster jabs every year to combat new variants to the yearly flu wave that we have every year. The vaccine is the same Oxford AstraZeneca made in the uk but is made under licence in India.

If I was allowed to give you a hug I would because you are absolutely right..the ministers getting vaccinated they are looking after themselves. This government has no morals and yet people will vote them into power again and again. The one party state. As for AstraZeneca not suitable for older people, it’s not true. France and Germany playing Europe politics…it’s all about their Brexit thing. In fact there was some data showing that it did better at protecting older people in Scotland. With the new variants no matter what age people should try and accept the vaccine..
