Government reiterates ban on importation of vehicles 10 years and older

Members of the public are reminded that the importation of vehicles 10 years and older, except those exempted in keeping with SRO. 43/2020, is a breach of the Customs Act and therefore illegal.

The ban on 10-year-old vehicles took effect on 31 January 2021. However, the Government allowed a grace period, which has expired, and the law is now in full effect. The public is therefore encouraged to take note as the offence carries stiff penalties.

All vehicles, 10 years and older, landed in Grenada after 5 April 2021, will be seized, forfeited to the State, and disposed of accordingly. Importers of these vehicles may be subjected to fines upon conviction of this offence. Furthermore, Government will also pursue legal measures to hold shippers, agents, and vessel owners/operators liable for the importation of banned vehicles.

The imposition of the ban on aged vehicles is part of Government’s efforts to protect the environment and lower the country’s carbon emissions. The ban is also intended to reduce the burden on the Grenada Solid Waste Management to dispose of and manage the growing number of derelict vehicles that are abandoned alongside public roadways or transported to landfill.

Whilst I broadly agree with the ban 10 years is just an arbitrary number plucked out of the air. The ban should be based on the current recorded emissions for each vehicle as some vehicles less than 10 years old dump emissions far in excess of younger vehicles. Amended emissionsresults, ie updated to take into account the fact that some manufacturers fiddled the figures, are available for all vehicles and would require no extra work for the government

Electric cars? I did not read that… But I do wonder what
“will be seized, forfeited to the State, and disposed of accordingly. ”
actually means? Disposed of accordingly, as in toss in sea to make reef for fish? I have good idea! Send them to China so can recycle.

For every car the manufacture bring in to the country they should take one of those abandoned cars at the road side back with them.
An alternative would be for the Government to charge the car manufacture a surtax and use that monies to improve solid waste management.

There are not enough swear words to describe the TOTAL STUPIDITY of this action. Who the H can afford electrical cars which in Grenada would cost $140,000EC plus you can’t even keep the power on for the hones and businesses how are you going to charge cars???? You truly are one if the most stupid, impractical governments ever. Elitist crap as the basic person can’t even afford food.

They are not referring to anything about electric cars “YET”, just vehicles older than 10 years. The newer vehicles have a much lower emissions than all the older vehicles in Grenada. But I agree, it will raise the cost of cars for the average Grenadian.

No Electric Car was mentioned in the release. The language you employed is a reflection of your level of reason and reveals your underlying hatred of the government of the day. You should be more measured in your outburst and preconceived hatred within you.
