The number of Covid-19 cases in Grenada continues to rise exponentially.
Statistics from the Ministry of Health reveal that as of 9 pm on 6 September 2021, the island recorded a total of 1,473 confirmed cases.
During the past week, the number of new cases ranged between 78 and 281 daily, with 231 new cases recorded on Monday.
At present, there are 1,194 active cases, with only 9 of these being imported. Females account for the majority of the cases, 54%, with 46% being males. Those who have tested positive for the virus, range in age from 2 months to 92-years old.
The majority of the cases are persons between 18 and 60 years of age, with 10% under 18 years and 6%, above 60.
The Ministry of Health reminds persons that while the vaccine will not prevent persons from contracting or spreading the virus, it reduces the severity of any symptoms and lessens the likelihood of hospitalisation and even death.
Covid-19 cases have been recorded in all parishes and on the sister island of Carriacou. Fourteen cases have been recorded in Carriacou thus far. A total of 1,194 persons are currently in isolation, having had some form of contact or exposure to a confirmed positive case. A further 560 persons are in quarantine.
The Ministry of Health is continuing its vaccination programme, administering the 2 vaccines which are available locally. To date, 27,046 persons have received their first dose and 19,483 persons have received both doses and are considered fully vaccinated.
The statistics further show that 4,155 persons have received the first dose of Pfizer and 56 persons, the second dose. For AstraZeneca 22,891 have received their first dose and 19,427 their second dose.
Vaccine administration by parish shows 72.9% of the total doses administered in St George, 8.4% in St Andrew, 3.8% in St David, 5.2% in St Patrick, 4.6% in St John and St Mark and 5.1% in Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
Comparatively, Grenada has one of the lowest rates of vaccination among Caricom member states. Statistics published by Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in late August, show St Kitts and Nevis at the top with 39%, Antigua and Barbuda with 34%, Barbados 32%, and Trinidad and Tobago and Dominica with 28%.
Four countries are recorded with rates lower than Grenada – the Bahamas, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Jamaica, and Haiti.
With regard to testing, health officials have conducted 62,307 RT-PCR tests to date.

My dear Grenadians
I am an English visitor to your beautiful island since 1984 and come every year. Please don’t be afraid of the vacine. I had my two Pfizer jabs in January & March this year and at 74 years old I am fine and well with no side effects. Please tust the scientists it may safe your life, anf it is the ONLY way we will beat this terrible disease.
I was making plans to visit my homeland in January, but I’ve cancelled those plans because unless 70% of the population are going to get vaccinated, the risk of coming on holiday and ending up in hospital is just too high. I totally agree that it’s Grenadians and Kayaks choice whether to take the vaccine – no one disputes that – but do you have the right to take Covid home to your elderly or housebound grandmother, or an innocent two year old child? Answer me that. Covid is not a cold or flu. Grenada doesn’t have enough ventilators and C’cou may have one. Paracetamol and bush tea isn’t a cure for Covid. Even Carriacou now has double figures of Covid cases now, and limited medical facilities. How will patients deteriorate, how will they get to Grenada hospital with no boats or planes operating?
It’s a sad situation and so unnecessary as the vaccine has been offered for free for months. I know people who previously worked at hotels that are now closed because while the risk of Covid is so high, ‘tourists’ will not return to our beautiful islands. Please give me one reason why they should? Tourist ships will not return with their US dollars. I know taxi drivers who have earned nothing for a year. If ‘you like it so,’ then all I can do is to pray for those who want to work and feed their families. The options are plain –
a) to get vaccinated
b) get ready for another 6 hard months because the winter tourists, me included, will go elsewhere to find the sun and spend their money. I love my country, and I long to return, and the situation of rising cases of Covid just breaks my heart.
Well said Diana. It breaks my heart too. I hope things turn around soon.
It is inevitable that the figures will rise because now they are testing their locals.
I am not sure why this was not done a year ago when they started gathering data on this virus.
Now they start testing the locals it is common sense the numbers will rise (cold/flu) will always give a positive result.
All they have to do now is organise the way testing is carried out as currently it is a mess.
One of the reasons Grenada is in trouble is that so many Grenadians don’t have a clue about Covid. Like you think cold and flu give a positive test result. Get real, get vaccinated or die of Covid. (Or starvation).
Pandora’s box has been opened in Grenada, now the virus will claim many more lives. Remember that the contents (the virus) came from China and their laboratories.
What’s your point?
The fully vaccinated MAY have a mild case of Covid that does not require hospitalization or a ventilator. Most fully vaccinated people do not have breakthrough Covid.
Please understand medicine and vaccines are a part of God’s amazing grace.
Grenada has now moved from Level 1 to Level 3 on CDC high risk travel list!!
And yet Sandals is still bringing them in…
The fully vaccinated guests at Sandals are tested twice and can only leave the resort on tours booked through the resort, which are all with fully vaccinated tour operators. They can not leave the resort any other way.
the wave we are experiencing now came from Grenadian persons living abroad, not tourists.
the writing is on the wall and it’s written large & bold – the only way forward now is to get at least 80% of the population vaccinated as soon as possible.
Grenadians, please see sense and do what needs to be done for your own safety and that of those around you.
Otherwise, we will be under continued lockdowns and restrictions for another year or more.
