PM Mitchell pleads for Grenadian medical professionals outside country to return

  • Grenadian family members in region and diaspora called to contribute to healthcare system
  • Citizens called on to become vaccinated

Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell has made a plea for Grenadian doctors and other medically trained personnel who are residing outside of the country to return and help the healthcare system which is currently stretched because of the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak.

“We have trained hundreds of doctors in this country,” he said, disclosing that he has personally made calls to Grenadian family members in the region and diaspora to encourage their relatives who are in the medical profession to come and contribute to the healthcare system.

“I have called on family members whether they have nurses and so on, to come and give 2 weeks. We need you; your country needs you. We need everybody to come at this time,” he said during the weekly post-cabinet briefing on Tuesday, 28 September 2021.

Admitting that the nursing staff at all healthcare facilities are overstretched, he said that they cannot manage every facility, and volunteers are needed to turn community centres into temporary clinics for testing and vaccination for Covid-19. “Clinics need to be opened so that people can get the service when they need it. The more we cooperate the more we help them and help ourselves, it will be better for us,” Dr Mitchell said.

Using the opportunity to thank and praise the various medical teams who have returned to Grenada to assist with the ongoing community spread of the virus, it is the Prime Minister’s wish that others will take a page from them and voluntarily offer their service to the country’s healthcare system.

The Prime Minister said that he is hopeful that Grenada will soon get over this wave of the virus. “I am confident, we have passed through many storms before, this is another. This is probably the biggest storm because no country has ever dealt with a virus, a pandemic of the entire society which is what all countries in the world are facing,” he said. Dr Mitchell is calling on citizens to become vaccinated.

    There are many Grenadians who left Grenada but you can’t take out the Grenadian from them.

    However, this a crisis and help is needed and fast. On the hand, I can’t help noticed the convenient cry of patriotism. It seems Grenada government only know Grenadians in diaspora when it’s convenient.

    Calling on Grenadians abroad does address the maladministration, Cronyism and corrupt environment in which business is done in Grenada.

    To add, there is them vs is mentality amongst Grenadians at home and those in the diaspora.

    There is hardly a family in Grenada which does not have family members in diaspora but yet there seems to be a them vs us. If someone made mentioned if healthcare services Grenada it is construed as an attack. It is not seen as advocating for improvement.

    Grenadians vote and continue to vote against their own interests as most are caught up in the color politics of the day. It’s hard to have an object conversation without being labeled anti color this, that and the other.

    It’s unbearable of the stress people have put up with in Grenada. If you’re poor you are really exposed. There is no social justice. There is no food security. Grenada imports a lot more than it exports. Economy is fake as it not based on Grenadians living in Grenada and being able to afford necessities. Price of everything is quoted in USD..

    There are many Grenadians who returned and are living in their own little corner Grenada without getting involved at the national level. Simply, because there no avenues for engagement without being branded or labeled a color supporter.

    If the current government is serious about asking Grenadians to, they should mandate that all Grenadians can vote in elections regardless where they are located in the world.

    Don’t just call on them when it’s convenient but give them the right to participate in managing the affairs of the tri-island state of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

    The PM does not seem to encourage or mandate vaccines – there lies the answer to the self made covid catastrophe . Health professionals are needed to help with the sick – the lack of proper medical facilities another neglected issue – needs to be done ASAP –
