Tropical Shipping donated US$5,000 to eleven 5th-form students from Hillsborough Secondary and Bishop’s College in Carriacou on Wednesday, 16 November 2022.

The scholarship award dubbed Grenadines Educational Scholarship Programme (GESP) is an initiative of Tropical Shipping’s newly established Grenadines Service in collaboration with its Giving Committee.

Six students from Bishop’s College and 5 students from Hillsborough Secondary School received $1234.95 each to assist with the payment of their upcoming May/June Caribbean Secondary School Examinations (CSEC) and school supplies for the remainder of the academic year.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Affairs and Local Government, Javan Williams said, “When Tropical Shipping contacted the ministry for assistance with the selection of the recipients, the Minister Hon. Tevin Andrews was thrilled by the gesture and complimented Topical’s efforts to giving back.”

Williams also encouraged the recipients to value the scholarship and use it as an opportunity to propel themselves in whichever area of study they are aspiring into. “Do not become complacent, think constructively, avoid instant gratification and ensure your educational pursuits align with your purpose,” he said.

At the handover ceremony, Tropical Shipping Island Manager Cheney Joseph said, “This award is Tropical Shipping’s support to develop not only national, but regional leaders.” He encouraged the recipients to use our very own leaders such as Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) Timothy Antoine as a benchmark.

Principals from both secondary schools and Area Education Officer Rosalina Patrice-Lendore were also in attendance at the ceremony and expressed their gratitude for their students being selected as recipients of Tropical Shipping’s inaugural Grenadines Educational Scholarship Programme.

Students were selected based on their academic prowess and need for financial assistance.

This donation is the second financial contribution Tropical Shipping Grenada has made for the calendar year 2022.
