The GUT Co-operative Credit Union recently awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships to assist 10 first year students of the T A Marryshow Community College (TAMCC).
To qualify, applicants had to demonstrate financial need and submit a short essay on their goals. Additionally, four previous recipients had their scholarship renewed for a second year since they were able to achieve an overall grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
“This initiative corresponds with one of the core operating principles of the GUT Co-operative Credit Union which seeks to bring about human and social development, and educational and financial independence through higher education and lifelong learning,” said Egbert La Geer, chairperson of the Credit Union’s Education Committee. Since the inception of the scholarship 3 years ago, the Credit Union has invested over EC$50,000 into the programme.
As a financial institution created by teachers, the GUT Credit Union places a high value on education and is committed to supporting the nation’s youth through many of its initiatives including: CPEA Grant, Secondary School Financial Literacy Quiz, financial seminars for children ages 5-15, and the ‘Pass the Torch’ calypso writing programme.
