IMANIs Fostering Volunteerism

The Community Project component of the New IMANI Program for Batch three (3) trainees continues this week.

Coordinator of Supervisors, Kerlin Charles, describes the component as pivotal in fostering community spirit and volunteerism among young people. “Each group of trainees is expected to undertake a community project on a quarterly basis, during their two-year training tenure under the New IMANI Program, which affords the trainees the opportunity to give back to their communities and foster volunteerism.”

Each group of trainees, with the assistance of the various supervisors, is undertaking projects at various points throughout the island, from Wednesday 27 to Sunday 31 August.

The activities commenced yesterday at the Grenada Boys Secondary School, and will conclude with an appreciation day at the Cadrona Home, in St Andrew. For the entire week the trainees will be distributing back to school hampers, food hampers and gift baskets, assisting matrons at children’s and elderly homes, beautifying schools and other tourist attraction sites, among other projects.

Program Manager, Norman Gilbert, is pleased with the areas chosen by the trainees. He strongly believes that by undertaking these projects the trainees will bridge the gap that has been existing for many years between the elderly and young people.

“I believe that it is an important exercise for the trainees. It will, in my opinion, enhance the community spirit and aid in community development and also bring the older heads and our youth closer together,” Mr Gilbert said.
