- EC$38.4 million in aid will fund Cricket Stadium renovation and other projects
- Over 1,800 Grenadians have attended training courses in China
- Chinese government has implemented several China-Aid framework projects
China is to provide EC$38.4 million in aid to the Government Grenada which will see the funding used for the Cricket Stadium renovation and other projects.
On 9 December, Dr Zhao Yongchen, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Grenada, and Hon. Peter David, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Labour of Grenada, signed the Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of Grenada.
According to the agreement, the Chinese government will provide a grant fund of 100 million Chinese RMB yuan (EC$38.4 million) to the Grenadian government to implement the Cricket Stadium Renovation Project and other projects.
Ambassador Zhao Yongchen said that under China-Aid framework, the Chinese government has implemented many projects for Grenada such as Low-Income Housing Project, Rebuilding of Grenada National Cricket Stadium and Athletic Stadium, and Technical Cooperation on Agriculture.
A statement from the Chinese Embassy in Grenada said that since 2005 more than 200 Grenadian students have studied in China sponsored by the Chinese government and over 1,800 Grenadians have attended seminars or short-term training courses in China.
The Chinese hospital ship Peace Ark visited Grenada twice, providing free medical service to the Grenadian people. The Chinese government also donated police vehicles and medical equipment to the Grenadian government.
“All these projects are funded by the Chinese government grant assistance. He hopes the signing of the agreement will further enhance the bilateral cooperation under the Belt and Road initiative and promote the social and economic development of Grenada,” the statement said.
Minister David, on behalf of the Grenadian government, expressed his sincere appreciation to the Chinese government and people for the generous assistance. He acknowledged the support from the Chinese government to Grenada in infrastructure, education, sports and many other areas and said that Grenada is willing to deepen the cooperation with China under the Belt and Road initiative.
That is what happens when people dont educate themselves about the issues. The politician only care about enriching themselves. But dont worry them will sell pass port to cook oildown and everything will be alright. Wake up people of Grenada, wake up now before it’s too late.
Money trap! Nothing good come from this.
Always publish what is requested for the Grant.
It’s always good to have someone who is willing to help without caring about the color of the skin of the residents. But what the grantor wants is very important. The industry that grenada needs to develop is the industry that brings in money into the country. Therefore Grant’s is just free money for officials of the Government. How does a Stadium enhance the revenue building of grenada. No one plans to visit Grenada to go to the Stadium. They plan a visit to Dive Swim, visit the Falls, enjoy the Beaches, and Eat the food and some other things. So we need Education, and Help in the Areas that will promote revenue building. Work on that instead of looking for money which will tie Grenada to a communist government.. I said Grenada because you will be long gone when Grenadians will have to deal with China in reference to this Grant which will be devided among the Elected Officials.as they build the stadium to pacify the poor masses. The Stadium acts as a big Chinesr Monument. In the eyes of the poor. Think about it why cant rhe Chineese provide help behind the scenes instead of requiring a large monument in their name. Kind of remind me of the Roman empire. Or the Roman Catholic Empire.( A large Cross on a hill comes to mind). I wish the best for grenada. But I dont wish that this little island will be doped into allowing Chineese trawlers to drag all the fish in their territories, or dig for gold and oil aroung its territories as we all know is the aim of this big giant.
Wow enjoyed my time there with US military 94-96 stayed with commander
We just have to take a look at what is happening in Africa with the Chinese influx. The Chinese have no respect for black people. We also need to looks at their human rights record. We need to stop begging and start promoting “self worth and hard work”. Yet again, we allow ourselves to be exploited. Very Sad.
All I can say is, here we go!! It’s the beginning of the “Chinese belt and road initiative” cant wait to get hands on the MONEY.. As you can see, the Cheshire cat obviously got the cream, well he thinks he has…I guess he can “jump ship” when the time comes to pay back. When will we learn, nothing is for nothing, especially when the Chinese are involved?
Personally, I don’t have a dependency on Grenada for my existence. But the ones who do are the vulnerable, under achiever and by definition sits within the lower echelon of society. The ones who consistently vote for party and personality, rather than country and what can be achieved with good governance and Government. When will we learn?
The comments are interesting but the story identifies the monies as a “grant”. Grants are NOT loans usually, they are gifts with purpose. What is the purpose, another stadium, low income housing, or something else? What might Grenada owe China other than repayment? What kind of loyalty is expected? What’s happening with our fisheries?
The people of Grenada will be taken over by the Chinese government as this is China’s plan for the southern ocean territory . They are taking over the economic control of every country they help and is a road toward Grenada becoming a Chinese communists state ,I hhope the good citizens of Grenada put a stop to this right away.
That Minister David is dumb and arrogant like s*#t, as I’m sure as many other ministers. Grenada will continue to keep owing other countries money. And wait when China is ready to take over, they have been quietly planting their seeds into many different countries. Wait we will soon hear. The Grenadian system is so rubbish, that’s why we will never grow on our own merit.
All this debt ain’t going to end well
